Ismail al-Azhari ( Arabic إسماعيل الأزهري, DMG Ismāʿīl al-Azharī ; * 1902 in Omdurman ; † August 26, 1969 ) was a Sudanese politician.

Life

Ismail al-Azhari became president of the first political organization in Sudan, the Graduates General Congress, in 1940, and president of the National Unionist Party (NUP) in 1952 . The NUP won the parliamentary elections with Egyptian support. From January 6, 1954 to July 7, 1956, as Prime Minister, he led Sudan to independence on January 1, 1956. A coalition of the former Mahdi’s Umma party and the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), the political wing of the Khatmiyya brotherhood, led to the overthrow of al-Azhari six months after the country gained independence.

After a six-year military rule by Ibrahim Abbud , he was appointed chairman (president) of the sovereignty council, which functions as the collective head of state, on July 8, 1965 , but was already deposed and imprisoned in May 1969 by a military coup by Jafar Mohammed an-Numeiri .

He died in prison in 1969.
