Propyl isobutyrate can be obtained by reacting propyl alcohol with isobutyric acid in the presence of sulfuric acid.

Propyl isobutyrate is a colorless liquid with a pineapple-like odor that is sparingly soluble in water. At a concentration of 5 to 15 ppm , its taste is sweet and fruity, with nuances of citrus melon.
