The Riviera hare bells or Italian hare bells ( Hyacinthoides italica (L.) Rothm. , Syn . : Scilla italica L. , Scilla purpurea Mill. ) Is a plant from the genus of the hare bells ( Hyacinthoides ) in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).
description
The Riviera hare bell is a perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 15 to 25 centimeters. This geophyte forms onions as persistent organs.
The 6 to 30 flowers are pale blue to blue-violet in color, upright to protruding in a broad and short, conical, racemose inflorescence , with 1 to 2 centimeters long bracts at the base of the stem. The perigone is 7 to 8 millimeters long.
The flowering time is in May.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16, rarely 26.
Occurrence
The Riviera hare bell occurs in north-west Italy in west Liguria and in south-east France in Dauphiné . Here it can be found on stony meadows at altitudes from 0 to 1700 meters. This species is naturalized in southern Europe and locally also in Germany ( Dänschendorf in Mecklenburg).

The Riviera hare bell is rarely used in rock gardens and borders as an ornamental plant or as a cut flower. She has been in culture since 1594. The 'Purpurea' variety has dark blue flowers.
