Itaya amicorum is a species of palm that is restricted to a small area in the Amazon. It is the only species in the genus Itaya .

features

Itaya is a single-stemmed, unreinforced, hermaphrodite and multiple-flowering fan palm . The trunk is smooth. The leaves are fan-shaped (palmat), and induplicate folded (v-shaped). The leaf sheath is short, fibrous and torn open opposite the petiole. There is a hastula on the top and bottom of the leaf . The leaf blade lies in one plane, it is thin, circular and cut in the middle to about three quarters of the radius. The two halves of the leaf created in this way are in turn divided into four to seven elongated, wedge-shaped, four to sevenfold folded segments.

The inflorescence stands between the leaves, is long, curved and branched up to three times. All flowers are hermaphroditic and lack a stem-like base. The perianth is in two parts. The ovary consists of a carpel . The number of stamens is 18 to 24 per flower.

The fruit is oblong-egg-shaped or almost spherical. The exocarp is very small, grainy and roughened and has small perforations. The mesocarp is thick, white, dry and has anastomosing fibers and an outer layer of stone cells. An endocarp is not differentiated.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 36.

Distribution and locations

Itaya amicorum occurs in the Amazon region of the states of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Brazil, where it grows in the lowland rainforest .

Systematics

The genus Itaya is placed within the family Arecaceae in the subfamily Coryphoideae , tribe Cryosophileae . It is thought to be most closely related to Chelyocarpus and Cryosophila .

In the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew , only the species Itaya amicorum is recognized.

The generic name Itaya goes back to the Itaya River, a tributary of the Amazon. The first specimens of the species had been found in the vicinity. The species and genus were first described in 1972 by HE Moore.
