Ivan Klajn (born January 31, 1937 in Belgrade ; † March 31, 2021 there ) was a Yugoslav or Serbian linguist and translator .

Life

Ivan Klajn was the son of the musicologist Stana Đurić-Klajn (1905–1986) and the psychoanalyst and theater director Hugo Klajn (1894–1981). Like his half-brother Slobodan Ribnikar (1929–2008), he first studied physical chemistry , but broke off this course after a short time. He graduated from the University of Belgrade with a degree in Italian Language and Literature , where he obtained his doctorate in 1970 .

From 1984 he was full professor of Italian language and comparative grammar of Romance languages at the University of Belgrade. In 2002 he retired. He translated from Italian and English and wrote an Italian-Serbian dictionary. In addition, he also dealt with the Serbian language and questions of language planning . From 1974 he wrote columns on linguistic problems in the newspaper Borba , later in the Politika and in the NIN .

He was elected a corresponding member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 2000 and a full member in 2003 . He is one of the signatories of the declaration on the common language published in 2017 , which opposes a nationalistically motivated separation of the Serbo-Croatian language into individual languages ​​with artificially increased differences.

Ivan Klajn died in the hospital in the Zemun district of Belgrade as a result of a COVID-19 illness.
