Ivan Simonis

Iwan Simonis (actually Yvan Jean François Dieudonné ; born January 6, 1769 in Verviers ; † January 13, 1829 there ) was a Belgian entrepreneur and is also the name of one of the most renowned manufacturers of billiard towels. He brought the billiard cloth of the same name to fame and from 1799 is also considered a pioneer of European mainland industrialization .

Life

Jacques Joseph Simonis

Simonis was a son of the cloth manufacturer Jacques Joseph Simonis (born August 12, 1717 in Verviers; † March 3, 1789 ibid) and great-grandson of the company's founder Henri Simonis , who had specialized in the production of worsted yarn . Under his management and that of his brother Jean Antoine Simonis, the family business , which has been active since 1680, specialized in the production of billiards and snooker towels. In 1799 they had their weaving machines renewed by William Cockerill, Senior, and thereby initiated the industrialization of the European continent.

Simonis was married to Marie Agnès de Grand'Ry (1777-1837), daughter of the mayor of Eupen and cloth manufacturer André Joseph Grand Ry . The couple had nine children, Ivan's grandson was Burgrave Alfred Simonis .
