Ján Rajtár

Ján Rajtár (born April 4, 1954 in Tesárske Mlyňany ) is a Slovak Provincial Roman archaeologist at the Archaeological Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Neutra . He became internationally known through many years of systematic research into the Danube fort Iža-Leányvár .

career

Rajtár studied from 1973 to 1978 at the Philosophical Faculty of the Comenius University in Bratislava and from 1978 at the Archaeological Institute in Neutra. In 1982 there was his successful examination for a doctorate in philosophy . Later, from 1992 to 2000, he also held the post of research director for prehistoric history at this institute. During this activity, Rajtár presented his dissertation in 1998 "The Crisis of Roman-Germanic Relations in the Central Danube Region during the Second Century" and received the academic degree "Candidate of Science". From 2000 he was a member of the scientific council of his institute and in 2006 was appointed chairman of this council.

His areas of specialization are Roman history, as well as provincial Roman history in the context of Germanic culture. As part of his work, he received scholarships from 1989 to 1991 from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Bonn-Bad Godesberg, the Institute for Prehistory and Early History, Department of Provincial Roman and Near Eastern Archeology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and at the Roman Germanic Commission in Frankfurt. From 1999 to 2003 he was President of the Slovak Archaeological Society and has been a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute since 2002 .

Rajtár is married to the prehistorian Susanne Stegmann-Rajtár.

The archaeologist has been involved in several international research projects, including:

  • 1992–1996: Research into short-term Roman military installations north of the central Danube in collaboration with the DAI.
  • 1992–1996 The Amber Road - a Central European Project
  • 1995–1998 collaboration on the Encyclopedia: Corpus of Roman Finds in the European Barbaricum (CRFB) , which is coordinated at the national level by the Roman-Germanic Commission.
  • 2001 Research into the area around Iatrus Fort in Bulgaria in cooperation with the Roman-Germanic Commission, the Archaeological Institute of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Sofia and the Regional Historical Museum in Ruse.
  • 2005–2008 participation in the international Limes project "Frontiers of the Roman Empire".
