János D. Aczél (born December 26, 1924 in Budapest ; † January 1, 2020 ) was a Hungarian-Canadian mathematician .

Aczél received his doctorate in 1947 under Leopold Fejér at the University of Budapest in Budapest and was a professor at the University of Debrecen , where he headed the Analysis Department from 1952 to 1965, and then from the late 1960s at the University of Waterloo . In 1993 he was retired there . He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (1971) and a foreign member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (1990).

Aczél was known for his contributions to the theory of functional equations, on which he wrote several monographs and which he applied in information theory , the social sciences, and behavioral research . He was the first editor of the Aequationes Mathematicae .

He was awarded five honorary doctorates (including Karlsruhe 1990, Debrecen 2003, Graz). In 1961 he received the Mano Beke Memorial Prize and in 1962 the Prize of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In 1962 he gave a lecture at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Stockholm ( Some recent results and problems on functional equations ).
