The 1995/96 season was the third regular staging of the first division , the second Slovak ice hockey division . The championship was the HK VTJ Spišská Nová Ves , who, like the teams in places two to four, qualified for the extraliga relegation . There Spišská Nová Ves prevailed as the only team in the first division and rose to the extra league. The HK PPS Detva was relegated to the 2nd division.

In the main round, each of the twelve teams played a total of 44 games. The four best-placed teams after the main round qualified for the extraliga relegation. The teams in places 5 to 12 played the only relegated in the 2nd division in a relegation round in a round trip, with the results from the main round being taken over. Each team received two points for a win and one point for a draw. No points were awarded for a defeat after normal time.
