from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

János Fonovich (born November 20, 1715 in Alsó-László ; † December 15, 1806 ibid) was a Hungarian teacher and Jesuit .

His parents are Georgius and Dorothea Funovicz. He had at least four siblings (Catharina 1699, Paulus 1705, Ursula 1707 and Rosina 1714). His grandfather was Joannes Funovich.

Life

Fonovichs joined the Jesuit order at the age of 19 and studied philosophy and theology in Sopron .

As a Jesuit, Fonovich taught for a total of 12 years in Kolozsvár , Buda , Győr (was also director of the grammar school in 1754), Nagyszombat and Kassá . Subsequently, Fonovich was abbot of the religious house in Károlyvàros , pastor and director of a secondary school in Buda and pastor in Eger .

After the dissolution of the Jesuit order in 1773, Fonovich retired to Hédervár to the family of Count Viczay and worked there scientifically (the archive comprised over 15,000 volumes, a collection of coins and paintings as well as art objects). Probably due to his age, Fonovich went back to his birthplace and hometown Alsó-László in 1788 and worked there as a priest. As can be seen from the church documents, as “Father Joannes Saij Ex-Jesuita” he baptized a lot (first documented baptisms in January 1789).
