Ralf Quest (born March 27, 1938 in Berlin ) is a former German football player. In the top division of GDR football , the Oberliga , he played for SC Dynamo Berlin and for 1. FC Union Berlin . With both teams he was once a GDR Cup winner . He played an international match with the B national team of the DFV .

Athletic career

Start and league debut at SC Dynamo Berlin

Quest received his first football training at the small Berlin sports club Berolina Stralau . From 1952 to 1958 he played in the company sports club Einheit Treptow in East Berlin . After finishing school he learned the profession of stonemason. With Treptow, he was now eligible to play for the men's division, in 1957 in the then fourth-class Berlin district league . After a year in the district league, Quest moved to the top division SC Dynamo Berlin at the beginning of the football season in 1959. This season was equally successful for the 1.72 meter tall striker. The Dynamos achieved their best result so far with 3rd place in the major league and also won the GDR soccer cup at the end of the season. Two finals were required, the first ended 0-0, but in the second attempt SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt was defeated 3-2 on December 13, 1959. Quest was called up as a left winger in both matches. In the following seasons Quest was GDR runner-up with Dynamo Berlin (1960) and again third in the league (1961/62). On June 10, 1962 Quest stood again with the SC Dynamo in the cup final. Called up as a center forward in this game, the second cup win did not succeed. SC Chemie Halle won the game 3-1. It was Quest's final season at Dynamo. After three seasons he had 56 appearances in league point games and scored 14 goals.

Cup surprise with the Iron

In the summer of 1962 Ralf Quest joined local rivals TSC Oberschöneweide, who had just been promoted to the second-rate GDR league . During the season, the club merged to form TSC Berlin and in the following years became a top team in the GDR league. In the 1965/66 season the team was restructured again and played from January 1966 as 1. FC Union Berlin. Four months later, Quest rose to the top league with the Iron. In the following two years, the Unioners landed on secured midfield positions in the league and in 1968 they achieved their greatest success by winning the FDGB Cup. In the sensational victory over the GDR champions FC Carl Zeiss Jena Quest stood as a right inner striker and scored the winning goal for the Berliners in the 63rd minute with a 2-1. The following season brought disenchantment to the An der Alte Försterei , because Union rose in 1969 as the top division bottom back into the GDR league. Quest, who was now 31 years old, was only used three times in point and twice in cup games in the second division season, experienced a resurgence as an active player, but ended his career as a high-performance athlete in the summer of 1970. At Union he had again completed 67 league games, so that he was able to increase his record of first division games to 123. In the international arena, Quest was assigned to the B national team in 1967. For Union he also played six games in 1967 in the Intertoto Cup , the successor to the Intercup competition , which was held for the first time .

Career end

Like many of his Union teammates, he completed his football career at BSG EAB Lichtenberg 47 . In 1971 Ralf Quest led the team from the now third-rate district to the GDR league. In October 1972 he was officially adopted as a player. He then became a recreational footballer at StuNa Berlin.
