January rally 2013

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 30th January Rally , officially the 30th International January Rally , was held from 3rd to 5th January 2013 in Freistadt , Austria . It was the first round of the European Rally Championship in 2013 and was also part of the Austrian State Rally Championship , Historic State Rally Championship and the Czech Rally Championship .

background

The total length of this year's January rally was 825.3 kilometers. There were 18 special stages on the program, ten of them on the first day and eight more on the second day. The total length of the special stages was 248.34 kilometers, which were carried out exclusively on paved roads. A total of 97 vehicles started.

The German Hermann Gassner sen. as well as the Czechs Marcel Tucek and Jiri Petrasek were not admitted to the rally by the FIA stewards because they had presented a non-homologated vehicle model. For reasons of time, the former Formula 1 driver Robert Kubica , who takes part in the 2013 European Rally Championship , did not start at the first round of the season.

Course of the rally

Shakedown

Before the planned 1.99 kilometer shakedown on the Trölsberg in Freiberg, there was a heavy freezing rain in the afternoon, which created difficult conditions for all participants. The Czech Jan Kopecký won the shakedown with 1: 11.3 minutes and was 1.2 seconds faster than the French François Delecour . Only two tenths of a second behind, Beppo Harrach was third behind the French.

day 1

All participants had to adjust to difficult track conditions on the first three special stages. Jan Kopecký decided on the risk variant on the first special stage and achieved the first best time with wide studded tires . However, he was only able to drive the 19th and 22nd times on special stages two and three. Raimund Baumschlager was already one minute behind after the first special stage, but with narrow tires he was able to make up ground in the next stage and won the second special stage. Simon Wagner surprisingly won the third special test. Vaclav Pech had to struggle with the ice again and again on wide tires and got off the track on the third special stage. After the first three special stages, he finished third behind Baumschlager. Harrach was only 14.1 seconds behind the Czechs in fourth place. After the fifth special stage Baumschlager was in the lead, but one stage later Kopecký took the lead again.

On the eighth special stage of the day, thick fog came up when drivers Jan Kopecký, Bryan Bouffier , Raimund Baumschlager and François Delecour had already completed their drive. All other drivers who started later had to accept large backlogs due to poor visibility. The ninth and penultimate special stage of the day was won by the Czech Václav Pech , his first and only special stage victory in this rally. His lead on this special stage was very large, so that only the overall leader Kopecky as well as Bouffier and Baumschlager could race for victory. Many drivers used intermediate tires on the tenth and final special stage, while others set off with rain tires. Jan Kopecký finished the first day 20.2 seconds ahead of Bryan Bouffier and 38.9 seconds ahead of Baumschlager. Overall, there were a lot of failures on the first day. This affected the Austrian Simon Wagner, among others, who crashed into a house wall and was able to continue driving after changing tires until an overheating of the engine finally forced him to give up. The Pole Michał Sołowow also retired due to an electronic defect, and Martin Semerad , Kris Rosenberger , Michael Böhm and David Glachs had to end the race prematurely with engine failure .

day 2

After the turbulent weather conditions on the first day, it rained all Saturday with relatively mild temperatures. On the second day the trio Kopecký, Baumschlager and Bouffier pulled away by a large margin. On the 15th special stage Kopecký had a puncture and lost about a minute, so that Bouffier took the lead. From then on it was a close duel between Kopecký and Bouffier until the final. The Czech was 10.6 seconds short of Bouffier. On the 18th and final special stage, Kopecký took the lead and secured overall victory at the 2013 January rally with a lead of 0.5 seconds over Bouffier. Kopecký repeated his previous year's victory. On the second day, Baumschlager concentrated on defending third place, which he managed to do. The three-time winner Václav Pech took fourth place. The Austrian Beppo Harrach had his vehicle setup modified. After that, things went better for him, he was able to improve from seventh to fifth and in the end had a lead of 1.1 seconds over Poland's Kajetan Kajetanowicz . The German Hannes Danzinger and co-pilot Kathi Wüstenhagen won the 2WD .
