January rally
The January rally (also Castrol-January rally or IQ January Rally ) is a car - rally in space Freistadt ( Mühlviertel , Upper Austria ), each beginning January takes place.
The event
In the 1980s, the January rally, with its sponsor at the time, Castrol , was one of the most important rally state championship races in Austria and was also part of the European rally championship . Among other things, the Audi quattro made its first officially rated rally in this competition in 1981. The winner at that time was "host" Franz Wittmann . In 1984 Wittmann was even able to relegate ex-rally world champion Björn Waldegård to second place in “his” January , who, together with his former rallycross rival and here only co-driver Franz Wurz, drove an equivalent Audi quattro through the Mühlviertel.
At the end of the 1980s, the January rally was suspended due to protests by local environmentalists. After a break of over ten years, it was held again for the first time in 2001, now with a new sponsor ( IQ discount ). This cooperation was terminated with the beginning of the January 27th rally.
For 2010, the organizers and the Mühlviertel rally club had to cancel the event in November 2009, the reasons given for the cancellation were non-feasible conditions imposed by the authorities.
From 2012, after a long break, the January rally was again part of the European rally championship as well as the Austrian and the Czech national rally championship.
There was no January rally in 2016 and 2017. From 2018 it will again be part of the Austrian state rally championship.
