József Tempfli

József Tempfli (born April 9, 1931 in Schinal , † May 25, 2016 in Oradea ) was a Romanian clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Oradea Mare .

Life

József Tempfli attended the St. Ladislaus high school in Oradea, later the Piarist high school . After a pedagogical training in Satu Mare , he worked as a teacher and educator from 1955 to 1956. In 1956 he entered the seminary of Alba Iulia and studied theology and philosophy. On May 31, 1962, he was ordained a priest by Márton Áron , Bishop of Transylvania. He was pastor in Tinca (Bihor) (1962–1979), Tăşnad (1981–1990) and Satu Mare (1979–1981) and Oradea Olosig (1981–1990). On June 27, 1982 he was appointed abbot of the monastery of Sâniob.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Oradea Mare on March 14, 1990 . The Archbishop of Esztergom , Cardinal László Paskai OFM , ordained him episcopal on April 26th of the same year in the Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary in Oradea ; Co- consecrators were Lajos Bálint , Bishop of Alba Iulia , and Endre Gyulay , Bishop of Szeged-Csanád . On December 23, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement.

For his work, especially during the time of Romania's communist rule, he received numerous religious and secular honors. He was an important leader of the Hungarian community in Romania and received the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary (Grand Cross) .
