János Scheffler (born October 29, 1887 in Kálmánd , Sathmar County , Austria-Hungary ; † December 6, 1952 Jilava , Romania ) was the Roman Catholic bishop of Satu Mare and Oradea Mare . He was beatified on November 3, 2011.

Life

János Scheffler came from a poor background, attended high school in Satu Mare, studied theology at the theological faculty of the University of Budapest and was ordained a priest on July 6, 1906 . He studied in Rome and obtained a doctorate in canon law . He taught philosophy and theology in 1923 at the seminary in Satu Mare, in 1926 at the seminary in Oradea and from 1940 canon law at the University of Cluj .

On March 26, 1942, Pope Pius XII appointed him . to the bishop of Satu Mare. He received the episcopal ordination on May 17, 1942 by the Archbishop of Esztergom , Jusztinián György Cardinal Serédi OSB ; Co- consecrators were the bishop of Csanád , Gyula Glattfelder and the bishop of Košice , István Madarász . On April 9, 1948, after the two bishoprics were again merged, he was also appointed bishop of Oradea Mare.

On May 23, 1950, János Scheffler was arrested and placed under house arrest in the Franciscan monastery. On March 10, 1952, he was taken to Jilava Prison near Bucharest and tortured there. He died on December 6, 1952 and was buried anonymously. The exact location was noted by the prison's Orthodox pastor and showed it to a Catholic priest who secretly excavated the earthly remains. They were buried in the crypt of Satu Mare Cathedral; on June 17, 2011, she was placed in a side altar of the cathedral church.

Appreciation

In 1999, Bishop Dr. Johannes Scheffler was included in the German martyrology of the 20th century as a witness of faith .

On July 3, 2011, he was celebrated in the main square in Satu Mare in the presence of Cardinal Angelo Amato , Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints , on behalf of Pope Benedict XVI. beatified. The main celebrant was Cardinal Péter Erdő .
