Jörg Böckem (born January 15, 1966 ) is a German journalist and author and comes from the area around the small town of Erkelenz on the Lower Rhine . He writes for newspapers and magazines such as Die Zeit , Der Spiegel and Jetzt . He also worked for Tempo magazine, which was published from 1986 to 1996 .

Life

Jörg Böckem was born in a village near Erkelenz, the son of a craftsman and a doctor's assistant. The mother gave up work so that she could devote herself entirely to raising the child. She also decided that her son shouldn't go to kindergarten. The father, a trained iron smith, did further training as a heating fitter and from then on brought the money home on his own. Even as a young boy, Jörg Böckem was interested in things that spoke against the well-protected parental home as much as possible. He took a liking to verbal duels with teachers and headmasters as a class and later headmaster, campaigning for rock concerts at the school and going to all the demos - he was rebellious. Early experiments with drugs like hashish and LSD were inevitable . At the age of 18 he had already discovered his king drug, heroin . Even then, he recorded his experiences in the form of reports, detailed descriptions of trips.

In 2004, after the third, this time successful, withdrawal, his autobiographical book Let me survive the night was published by DVA-Verlag . It covers just that: his life as a heroin junkie and his difficult path out of addiction. In 2005 it was published as an audio book by RoofMusic . The revelation of his double life encouraged addicts to confide in him. He spoke to many and met with seven of them to capture their stories in and sometimes out of addiction in another book. It was published in 2005 under the title Afterwards everything was different from DVA-Verlag. Until recently, he himself suffered from the consequences of his longstanding addiction, a hepatitis C disease, which he overcame in lengthy therapy. On Spiegel-Online.de he kept a regular addiction and therapy diary until 2007.

Jörg Böckem currently lives in Hamburg and has not used any stimulants since 2001.
