Jörg Monar

Bernd Jörgen Monar (born July 22, 1960 in Bonn ) is a German political and social scientist . Among other things, he teaches at the College of Europe , which he has headed as Rector from September 2013.

Life

After graduating from high school in Stuttgart , Monar studied at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster , the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , as well as in Paris at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris and the University of Paris IV . Subsequently, Monar received his doctorate in modern history from the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich in 1989. He obtained a second doctorate in 1991 in the field of political and social sciences at the European University Institute in Florence . In the same year Monar was appointed Assistant Professor at the College of Europe in Bruges . From 1995 to 2001 Monar was a professor at the University of Leicester . This was followed by a teaching position at the University of Sussex. After teaching at the College of Europe for 17 years, Monar was elected to the university's board of directors in 2008. In March 2013, the university's board of directors appointed him to succeed Paul Demaret as rector. He took up the post in September 2013.

Monar is the author of several books and editor of various professional journals, such as the European Foreign Affairs Review. He is also a member of various academic organizations, including the European Integration working group . He also works in an advisory capacity for European and national institutions. He advised the British House of Lords from 1999 to 2006.
