life and work

Jörn Rau was established in 1922 as the son of Study Council born Karl Rau in Wesermünde-Lehe. As a toddler, Jörn Rau contracted polio and his right leg remained paralyzed as a result of the disease. From 1928 he attended the elementary school in Cuxhaven-Ritzebüttel , after the family moved to Hamburg then from 1930 the Free Goethe School in Hamburg-Wandsbek . In 1939 he began an apprenticeship as a carpenter in Hamburg, which he continued in the 2nd and 3rd year of apprenticeship in the master class for carpenters at the University of Fine Arts in Lerchenfeld. In 1942 he passed the journeyman's examination and began studying at the building schools in Hamburg and Hildesheim. In 1945 he passed the final exam to become a civil engineer.

From 1946 on, Rau worked for ten years as an employed architect in the office of Carl-Friedrich Fischer and Godber Nissen , where he was involved in numerous furniture designs. In 1956 he started his own business. From 1962 to 1971 he entered into a partnership with Walter Bunsmann and later with Paul-Gerhard Scharf . From 1971 Rau continued to run the office in Hamburg's Johnsallee alone. In 1979 Rau entered into a partnership with Heinrich Blessmann . In 1990, Rau and Heidi Hövermann founded an office in Hamburger Hochallee, and in the same year a joint venture with the architect Peter Andrees in Plau am See in Mecklenburg. In 2001 Rau retired and died in Hamburg in 2007.

In retrospect, Rau called his most important projects the Political Academy Biggesee , which was the largest project of his career, as well as the Thomas More Church in Hamburg and several single-family houses.
