Jørgen Gersing

Jørgen Gersing (born July 2, 1927 in Nykøbing Falster , Sjælland region ; † June 8, 1988 ) was a Danish lawyer who was last judge at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) from 1982 until his death .

Life

After attending Marselisborg Gymnasium in Aarhus in 1946, Gersing began studying law at Aarhus University and Uppsala University while studying abroad between 1949 and 1950. He completed this degree in 1953 as Candidatus Juris (Cand. Juris). He then worked for a lawyer who was admitted to the Højesteret , Denmark's Supreme Court. In 1954 he switched to the civil service and worked for several years as a secretary in the Ministry of Justice (Justitsministeriet) and received his legal license in 1962.

After he was Deputy Public Prosecutor between 1964 and 1965, he served briefly in 1965 as acting judge at the City Court of Copenhagen and at the Court of Appeal for Eastern Denmark (Østre Landsret) . He then returned to the Ministry of Justice, where he was only acting head of department and, since 1968, deputy permanent secretary of the ministry. As such, he was also a member of the European Committee for Legal Cooperation, a working unit of the Conference of Justice Ministers at the Council of Europe, until 1973 .

In 1973 he was appointed permanent secretary in the office of Prime Minister Anker Jørgensen , in which office he remained until 1979. At the same time he was secretary of the State Council, the government of Denmark, from 1973 to 1979. At the same time, between 1973 and 1979 he was a member and chairman of various government committees advising and reporting to the cabinet.

In 1979 he was appointed judge at Højesteret and worked there until 1988. At times he was also the chairman of the Council for Occupational Safety and Health (Arbejdsmiljørådet) and the Council for Insurance (Forsikringsnævnet) .

On January 20, 1983, Gersing finally succeeded Max Sørensen as a judge at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg and was a member of this until his death on June 8, 1988. Successor was Isi Foighel , a politician of the Det Conservative Folkeparti , who was Minister for Taxes and Duties from September 10, 1982 to September 10, 1987 .
