Jewish community of Épinal
A Jewish community in Epinal in the Vosges department in the French region of Lorraine existed since the 18th century.
history
In 1886 there were 350 Jewish citizens living in Épinal and by 1900 there were already 390. During the German occupation in World War II , most of the Jewish citizens were deported and murdered.
The rabbinate of Épinal extended over most of the Département des Vosges. The smaller part belonged to the Rabbinate Remiremont since 1874. The rabbi of Épinal Moïse Durkheim (1806-1896) was the father of Émile Durkheim , the founder of sociology .
The Kahn and Lang families owned the Grands Sables textile factory , an important economic factor in Épinal.

The old synagogue of Épinal, built in 1863, was destroyed in 1940. The New Synagogue was built in 1952 and is still used for worship by the Jewish community today .
graveyard
The large Jewish cemetery in Épinal is on Rue Saint-Michel. A memorial for the victims of the Holocaust was erected there.
