history

Until a separate cemetery was set up in Eschwege, the dead were buried in the cemetery near Jestädt . In 1853 the Jewish community of Eschwege was able to create a new cemetery in Eschwege. On April 20, 1857, the first occupancy occurred through the funeral of a child. Since then, around 500 burials have taken place. From 1945 to 1948, a few more burials took place in the cemetery (several so-called displaced persons ). After the new construction of the district hospital in the 1960s, a large part of the previously unoccupied cemetery area was used for the construction of the car park and the helipad of the hospital. A previously open morgue and the cemetery attendant's apartment were demolished in the late 1970s.
