The Jewish cemetery Herleshausen is a cemetery in the municipality of Herleshausen in the Werra-Meißner district in Hesse .

The 2078 m² Jewish cemetery is located in the Gewann "Ölgrund" above the village at the north exit in a corner of the forest. In 1985 there were 69 tombstones in the cemetery , eleven of them with purely Hebrew inscriptions.

history

The cemetery was laid out in the second half of the 19th century and was occupied from 1876 to 1935, after which it was closed. The Jews who died on site up to the deportations in 1942 were buried in Eschwege . In the immediate vicinity of the Jewish cemetery, a cemetery for Russian prisoners of war was laid out during the Second World War . This had to be expanded because of the large number of deaths; therefore part of the Jewish cemetery was leveled and used for the Russian dead. Some burials were carried out between still existing Jewish graves.
