The Old Jewish Cemetery Sontra is a Jewish cemetery in Sontra in the Werra-Meißner district of Hesse . It is a protected cultural monument .

The site for the cemetery was acquired by the Sontra Jewish community in 1710. It is located on a hillside on Quesselsberg near the Heinrich Schneider Stadium . The cemetery was occupied from 1714 to 1922. A remnant of 125 tombstones is available.

New cemetery

A new Jewish cemetery, which was closer to the city, was created on the flat opposite slope of the Quesselsberg. Around 1920 the Jewish community of Sontra acquired a corresponding piece of land. At least 26 burials were carried out here between 1926 and 1937. The cemetery was destroyed during the Nazi era . Seven tombstones have been preserved and have been redesigned as a memorial . Today it is located within the premises of the Sontra Comprehensive School .
