The Jewish cemetery Witzenhausen is a Jewish cemetery in the town of Witzenhausen in the Werra-Meißner district in Hesse .

The 4686 square meter Jewish cemetery is located on the edge of the old town in the area of ​​the “old castle” at the confluence of the Gelster and the Werra . The cemetery, located between the “Am Sande” street and the Werra, can be reached via the “An der Fährgasse” footpath.

In 1985, 209 preserved tombstones were recorded, 56 of which are in the newer part of the cemetery with graves from the 20th century. The oldest stone found was dated "around 1680".

There is a memorial stone in the cemetery with the names of 55 people who were deported and murdered from Witzenhausen during the Nazi era .

history

The cemetery was probably created in the 17th century in the area of ​​the "old castle". In 1765 it was expanded through an agreement with the city.
