Jürg Grünenfelder (physician)

Jürg Grünenfelder (* 1967 in Chur ) is a Swiss heart surgeon. He is co-director of the Heart Clinic in Zurich.

Career

Grünenfelder studied medicine in Zurich from 1986 to 1992 and passed the American State Examination ECFMG in 1993 . He then took the training in General Surgery (1993) and from 1994 to 1995 cardiac and vascular surgery in Zurich. From 1995 to 1997 he worked in Boston , Massachusetts , first at Children's Hospital and later at Massachusetts General Hospital. From 1997 to 1999 Grünenfelder returned to Zurich to receive further training in general surgery and cardiovascular surgery under Felix Largiadèr and Marko Turina . From 1999 to 2000 he was a Research Fellow at Stanford University Medical Center in Stanford , California . From 2001 to 2002 Grünenfelder worked in the Clinic for Cardiovascular Surgery at the University Hospital Zurich , where he was a senior physician from 2002 to 2008. Grünenfelder received his habilitation at the University of Zurich in 2004. In the same year he received the FMH Cardiac and Thoracic Vascular Surgery. From 2008 to 2013, Grünenfelder was Senior Physician at the Clinic for Cardiac and Vascular Surgery at the University Hospital Zurich, where he was appointed Adjunct Professor for Cardiac and Thoracic Vascular Surgery from 2011 . Grünenfelder has been at the Hirslanden Heart Clinic in Zurich since 2013.

The core areas of Grünenfelder are cardiac and thoracic vascular surgery, as well as minimally invasive and robot-assisted cardiac surgery. 

Scientific achievement

Grünenfelder was significantly involved in researching minimally invasive cardiac surgery and in the preoperative planning of these interventions. We also introduced minimally invasive surgical aortic valve replacement without opening the sternum in Switzerland. Grünenfelder was involved in the first catheter-based aortic valve implantation in May 2008. He is also the author and co-author of over 100 publications that are listed on PubMed .
