Jürgen Basedow

Jürgen Basedow (born September 29, 1949 in Hamburg ) is a German legal scholar and emeritus director at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg (1997–2017) and professor at the University of Hamburg . From 2004 to 2008 Basedow was chairman of the Monopolies Commission .

Career

Basedow studied from 1969 to 1974 at the University of Hamburg, the University of Geneva and the University of Pavia . In 1981 he earned a Master of Laws from Harvard University . In 1979 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the recognition of foreign divorces at the University of Hamburg and habilitated there in 1986 on the transport contract . In 1987 he was appointed to the law faculty of the University of Augsburg , of which he was dean from 1993–1994. From 1995 he taught at the Free University of Berlin until 1997 when he became director of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg.

Basedow has been visiting professor at the University of Ferrara , University of Genoa , University of Lyon III , University of Oxford , Université Panthéon-Assas , University of Pittsburgh , Erasmus University Rotterdam , University of Tunis and New York University . Since 2002 he has been a full member of the Academia Europaea .

Research priorities and awards

Basedow's research focuses on international private law , European private and commercial law , in particular competition law , transport and traffic law and insurance law . He edited the Munich Commentary on the Commercial Code and a monograph on European insurance contract law.

Basedow was awarded the Otto Hahn Medal of the Max Planck Society in 1979 , holds an honorary doctorate from Stockholm University and an honorary professorship from Jiaotong University Xi'an . In 2012 the Leuphana University of Lüneburg and the State University of Tbilisi awarded him an honorary doctorate.

In 2017 he retired.
