Jürgen Christian Mertens

Jürgen Christian Michael Mertens (born September 24, 1953 ) is a German diplomat and ambassador to Argentina from 2017 to 2020 .

Life

After graduating from high school, he studied economics , history and political science and graduated in 1978 with the state examination. He then worked as a research assistant .

In 1981 he entered the diplomatic service and after completing his attaché training in 1983 he was employed at the embassy in Cuba and then from 1986 to 1990 at the embassy in Romania . After a subsequent activity with the German delegation at the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE), he worked for Section 421 of the Foreign Office in Bonn between 1990 and 1992 . Subsequently, he was head of the economic department at the embassy in Mexico and then from 1994 to 1996 permanent representative of the consul general in Miami .

After his return to Germany, from 1996 to 2000 he was deputy head of the education and training facility of the Federal Foreign Office and at the same time head of education and training for the higher service . After a subsequent position as head of the political department and the economic department of the embassy in India , he was head of the international conferences, multilateral events and summit meetings in the protocol department of the Federal Foreign Ministry from 2003 to 2006 (department 702).

At the same time, he was ambassador head of the organizational staff for the German EU presidency and the G8 summit in Heiligendamm in 2007 .

From August 2008 to July 2012 Jürgen Christian Mertens was Michael Glotzbach's successor as Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Colombia . His successor there in August 2012 was Günter Rudolf Knieß , who was previously ambassador to Argentina .

From August 2012 Mertens headed the protocol department of the Federal Foreign Office.

Since August 2017, Mertens has been the German ambassador to Argentina as the successor to the retired Bernhard Graf von Waldersee . In 2020 Ulrich A. Sante was nominated as his successor.
