Ulrich A. Sante

Ulrich Andreas Sante (born October 26, 1957 in Ottawa ) is a German diplomat . He was Ambassador to Singapore from July 2017 to August 2020 . He is ambassador-designate in Buenos Aires.

Life

As the son of a diplomat, Sante spent many years of his childhood and youth abroad, first in Canada , then in Russia , and finally in the United States . After graduating from high school in Bad Honnef and completing basic military service, Sante studied law and a minor in art history at the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg and the Rheinische Friedrich Wilhelms University in Bonn , where he passed his first state examination in law in 1984. Sante completed his training as a trainee lawyer at the Higher Regional Court in Celle and at the Higher Regional Court in Berlin , where he took the assessor exam in 1988. In 1989 he received his doctorate in law from the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn with his thesis on "Constitutional aspects of a legislative withdrawal from the peaceful use of nuclear energy".

Sante entered the diplomatic service in 1989. After completing his preparatory service , his path led him to the American Department of the Foreign Office in 1990, from there to the German Embassy in Asuncion in 1991 , from where he was transferred to Bonn in 1994 as deputy head of training for the higher foreign service. From 1996 to 1999 Sante was permanent representative at the German Embassy in Vilnius , where he played a key role in the founding of the German-Lithuanian Business Association. In 1999 he moved to the German Permanent Mission to the Western European Union (WEU) and in 2000 to the German Permanent Mission to the European Union . a. Deputy German spokesman in the Political and Security Committee (PSK). From 2002 to 2006, Sante was the Deputy European Correspondent in the Foreign Office, who assists the Political Director for coordinating all issues relating to the EU's common foreign and security policy and for issuing instructions to the German Permanent Mission to the EU in Brussels . From 2006 to 2009, Sante headed the press department of the German Embassy in Washington, DC as press spokesman. From 2009 to 2012, Sante was Head of Division at the Foreign Office in Berlin, responsible for the Common Security and Defense Policy of the European Union (CSDP). During this time, he was responsible for preparing the initiative of the Foreign Ministers of the Weimar Triangle on April 26-27, 2010 in Bonn to strengthen the civil-military capabilities of the European Union. In 2012 Sante became envoy and permanent representative at the German Embassy in Madrid . From 2014 to 2017 he was envoy and deputy permanent representative at the German permanent mission to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Brussels.

Sante is a visual artist, his preferred materials are wood, stone and metal. He has had private and public exhibitions in Brussels (2002, 2004, 2017), Dachau (2004), Düsseldorf (2004), Berlin (2006), Washington DC (2009) and Barcelona (2014). In August 2020, “Mediations: A Selection of Works by Ulrich Sante”, a video from the Private Museum Singapore, was released as a digital exhibition of plastic works he created, including a conversation with the Singapore ambassador for special tasks, Professor Tommy Koh.
