Portrait of Jürgen Martens (2008)

Jürgen Martens (born March 15, 1948 in Tostedt ) is a German chemist . Since 1986 he has been Professor of Organic Chemistry at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg .

Life

He began his career with professional training as a chemical laboratory assistant at Deutsche Shell AG in Hamburg, before studying chemical engineering at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences (graduated in 1970) and then with a degree in chemistry at the Technical University of Berlin (graduated in 1973). There he was awarded a Dr. rer. nat. doctorate, his mentor was Klaus Praefcke . In 1976 and 1977 he did a postdoc with Nobel Prize winner Robert B. Woodward , before he took on various positions in research, production and corporate planning at Degussa AG (today's Evonik AG) from 1977 to 1986 . In 1986 he accepted a professorship for organic chemistry at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg .

His academic students include Harald Gröger (professor at Bielefeld University) and Wolfgang Maison (professor at Hamburg University). His research focuses on the chemistry of heterocycles, especially heterocyclic imines , chromatographic separation of enantiomers , homogeneous catalysis and enantioselective synthesis .

Publications and patents

During his research, Jürgen Martens has written around 250 publications in specialist journals and articles in books and is the owner or co-owner of over 30 patents.
