Helmut Schwarz (chemist)
Helmut F. Schwarz (born August 6, 1943 in Nickenich ) is a German chemist . From January 2008 to December 2017 he was President of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation .
Life
Helmut Schwarz first learned the job of a chemical laboratory assistant , acquired his university entrance qualification through a second course of education and then studied chemistry in Berlin as a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation . In 1971 he obtained his diploma, in 1972 he received his doctorate , in 1974 he obtained his habilitation , with Ferdinand Bohlmann being his mentor. After research stays at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and in Great Britain, he has been a professor at the TU Berlin since 1978, and in 1983 he was appointed to a C4 professorship there.
Schwarz deals with the course of chemical processes at the molecular level, in particular the reactions of ionic and radical organic species in the gas phase. His research contributed a lot to the understanding of catalytic processes, and his investigations on fullerenes were also widely recognized by experts.
In addition, Schwarz played a key role in the further development of mass spectrometry , an analytical method often used in chemistry and forensics .
From 2010 to 2015 he was a member of the Presidium of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina - National Academy of Sciences . Schwarz is also a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (Acatech) .
Activities as editor and member of editorial boards
Schwarz was editor of the International Journal of Mass Spectrometry between 1983 and 2010 and editor of Chemical Reports between 1990 and 1994 . He was also a member of the editorial boards of Mass Spectrometry Reviews between 1990 and 2003, the Helvetica Chimica Acta between 1990 and 2002 and the Journal of the American Chemical Society between 2007 and 2015. He is currently a member of the editorial boards of “Advances in Physical Organic Chemistry "(since 2002).
