from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jürgen Schmidt (born August 5, 1918 in Berlin ; † October 14, 1980 in Houston , Texas , USA ) was a German mathematician who worked on the basics of mathematics , a. a. about set theory , set theoretical topology and universal algebra .

Scientific career

Jürgen Schmidt studied 1946-1950 mathematics at the Humboldt University of Berlin and at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and received his doctorate in 1952 under Erhard Schmidt and Karl Schröter to Dr. rer. nat. He was a research assistant in Berlin from 1950 to 1955 and completed his habilitation in 1956, first in Berlin, then at the University of Cologne , where he worked from 1958 to 1963, first as a lecturer and then as a scientific adviser and professor .

From 1963 to 1967 Jürgen Schmidt headed the department for basic research in mathematics at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Bonn . From 1967 he worked in the USA , initially until 1969 as a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the University of Georgia ( Athens , Georgia ) and the University of Houston ( Houston , Texas ). From 1969 Jürgen Schmidt held a position as Professor of Mathematics at the University of Houston.

According to the Mathematics Genealogy Project Jürgen Schmidt was PhD supervisor of fourteen doctoral students .
