Jürgen Timm (Rector)

Jürgen Timm (born February 18, 1941 in Hamburg ) is a German university professor and was the rector of the University of Bremen for many years .

biography

Studies, professional experience until 1981

Jürgen Timm studied mathematics, physics, education and philosophy at the University of Hamburg from 1962 to 1966 . In 1966 he passed his state examination for the higher teaching post at grammar schools. From 1966 to 1967 he received a doctoral scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation . In 1967 he received his doctorate. rer. nat., and in 1969 he completed his habilitation in mathematics. From 1967 to 1969 he was a research assistant and from 1969 to 1971 scientific councilor or senior counselor at the Mathematical Seminar of the University of Hamburg.

In 1971 he was appointed professor for statistics at the newly founded university in Bremen . From 1979 to 1981 he was Vice President for Structure, Research and Natural Sciences at the University of Bremen.

Professional experience since 1982, rector

From 1982 to 2002, Timm was the successor to Alexander Wittkowsky as Rector of the University of Bremen. At the same time he was chairman of the state rectors 'conference and a member of the senate of the university rectors' conference and from 1989 to 1999 a member of the structural commission of this association of German universities. Timm was also a member of the board of trustees or board member of various scientific associations, such as the Bremen State Board of Trustees of the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft and the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) in Bremerhaven. Scientific work

Timm's research is the weighing of opportunities and risks of therapies in medicine. As a planning and evaluating biometrician, he was already involved in numerous cancer research projects and investigations into the risks of various surgical operations before the competence center was founded, and wrote numerous studies and special publications. Further focal points are infectious diseases and cardiovascular diseases . He was involved in about a hundred clinical studies as the responsible biometrician.

He worked and works in several scientific commissions. From 1970 to 1980 he was a member of the Working Group Carcinogenic Exposure to Humans by Air Pollution , which was set up by the Federal Ministry of the Interior and which the German Cancer Research Center was in charge of . From 1986 to 1987 he worked as Temporal Adviser to the World Health Organization (WHO) in the development of the Air Quality Guidelines for Europe . From 1986 to 1992 he was a member of the LAI Commission on Cancer Risk from Air Pollution - Assessment Standards for Carcinogenic Air Pollution , which worked for the Conference of Environment Ministers. Since 1991 Timm has been a member of the Carcinogenic Environmental Influences working group in the overall program for combating cancer, the Prevention Department , an inter-ministerial cooperation and coordination program.
