Jānis Daliņš

Jānis Daliņš (born November 5, 1904 in Valmiera , † June 11, 1978 in Melbourne ) was a Latvian walker .

In 1932 in Los Angeles , a 50-km competition was held for the first time at the Olympic Games . British rider Tommy Green won this competition with a seven-minute lead over Dali Italienš and Italian Ugo Frigerio . Two years later, Daliņš won the 1934 European Championships in Turin in 4:49:52 h ahead of the Swiss Arthur Tell Schwab . He was the first Olympic medalist in Latvia and the first European athletics champion in Latvia.

At the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936 and at the European Championships in Paris in 1938 Jānis Daliņš was at the start, but did not reach the goal.

A stadium is named after him in his hometown of Valmiera .
