James Terry Steib SVD (born May 17, 1940 in Vacherie ) is an American religious and emeritus bishop of Memphis .

Life

James Terry Steib joined the order of the Steyler Missionaries and was ordained a priest on January 6, 1967 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Fallaba and auxiliary bishop in Saint Louis on December 6, 1983 . The Archbishop of Saint Louis, John Lawrence May , ordained him episcopal on February 10 of the next year ; Co-consecrators were the auxiliary bishops George Joseph Gottwald and Charles Roman Koester from Saint Louis.

He was named Bishop of Memphis on March 24, 1993 . Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on August 23, 2016.
