JJ Gray & Mofro are an American music group from Florida . Their music is a mixture of the genres : soul , blues , southern rock and funk .

Band history

Born near Jacksonville , Florida, John Gray Higginbotham (* 1967), or JJ Gray for short, met guitarist Daryl Hance in the late 1980s and they formed the band Alma Zuma . In 1994 they brought a demo to England where they were supposed to sign a record deal. Nothing came of that, instead they found two new band members and started as Mofro in 1998 . The line-up changed over the years and JJ Gray is the only constant in the band's history.

The musicians went back to the USA, where they finally found accommodation with Fog City Records in the early 2000s . There their debut album Blackwater was produced, which was released in 2001, followed by Lochloosa (2004). Over the years her popularity grew through tours and performances. In 2006 they switched to the blues label Alligator Records with the same producer Dan Prothero, but from now on under the name JJ Gray & Mofro . With their first album on the new Country Ghetto label , they had their first major success, and it entered the independent album charts. Orange Blossoms , which was released a year and a half later and with which they entered the official album charts for the first time , received very positive reviews . With album number five, Georgia Warhorse , they even made it to number 74 on the Billboard 200 in 2010 . In 2011 the band released their first live album, Brighter Days , which is also available on DVD.
