Jack Dunphy

John Paul Jack Dunphy (born August 22, 1914 in Atlantic City , New Jersey , † April 26, 1992 in New York City ) was an American dancer, novelist and playwright, best known for his longstanding relationship with Truman Capote .

Life

Dunphy grew up in Philadelphia , studied dance and in 1939 married the dancer Joan McCracken (1917–1961). He toured with George Balanchine's company for a long time , including through South America in 1941. In 1943 he and his wife worked in the Broadway production of the musical Oklahoma! With. In 1951 the marriage was divorced again.

In 1948 Dunphy first met Truman Capote, with whom he bought a house in Taormina , Sicily in 1950 that had previously belonged to the writer DH Lawrence . The couple stayed together until Capote's death, who made Dunphy the sole heir in his will.
