Jack Reilly
John Aloysius "Jack" Reilly (born January 1, 1932 in New York City , † May 18, 2018 in New Jersey ) was an American jazz pianist , composer , arranger and author.
Live and act
Reilly began his musical career in 1946; this was followed by studies with Lennie Tristano , Ludmila Ulehla and Hall Overton . After completing his military service in the US Navy, he returned to New York in 1954; He made his debut as a professional musician in the band of John LaPorta , with whom he performed at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival . In the following years he worked with his own trio; as a soloist he has also appeared with various symphony orchestras, choirs and chamber ensembles that played his compositions. He worked as musical director for David Frost ( That Was the Week That Was ) and as arranger / pianist for singer Gloria Loring and for the Broadway production of Samuel Beckett's play Eh Joe . He presented a number of albums under his own name and was involved in recordings a. a. with Ben Webster , Ray Starling's New York Neophonic Orchestra and George Russell's New York Band , with whom he also performed at the Village Vanguard . His best-known compositions include Jazz Requiem, Jazz Oratorio , Theme and Variations for Orchestra and Orbitals, Piano Concerto (2001). In the field of jazz he was involved in 22 recording sessions between 1958 and 2007. In 2001 his piano concerto Orbitals was premiered by him as a soloist and the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra. In November 2012, his Jazz Requiem had its German premiere at a performance in Mainz with the conductor Daniel Rumpf , choir and jazz quintet, with Reilly as the soloist. In 2013 he was Artist in Residence at Brigham Young University, where he performed The Music of Bill Evans and Jack Reilly with his trio.
Reilly is the author of a jazz piano school and a two-volume book analyzing the compositions of Bill Evans . After teaching at Mannes College of Music , he was appointed professor of jazz piano at the New England Conservatory in 1982 .
