action

The shy, reclusive single Jack works in New York City for his uncle as a chauffeur for large limousines. His only friend, his colleague Clyde, and his wife Lucy want to introduce him to Connie, a work colleague of Lucy, over dinner. Connie also has problems with closeness, and also with intimacy. Connie wishes to take a boat trip on the lake next summer, so Jack sets himself the goal of finally overcoming his insecurity about the water and learning to swim. Clyde is happy to help and gives Jack lessons.

Connie is sexually molested and injured on the subway. Jack visits her in the hospital and learns that apart from her mother, nobody has ever cooked a meal for her. So he decides to prepare a menu for Connie himself. However, this requires further instruction because Jack cannot cook. Here, too, Clyde can help: he stubbornly recommends the man with whom his wife Lucy cheated on him some years ago, the chef Frederick Cannoli. Clyde tells Jack not to mention to Lucy that he is now privy to their affair.

Jack has prospects now. He has regular swimming lessons from Clyde, and Frederick trains him in cooking. And so he also finds the strength to submit an application for a new job. He carelessly gives Lucy a hint that Clyde told him about her affair with the cook. In return, she reports to him about an affair with Clyde.

After a failed attempt to get intimate with Jack, Connie explains that she isn't ready for penetration just yet. At Connie's request, Jack satisfies her with his hand while they describe their respective ideas about relationships.

After six trials of cooking in Lucy and Clyde's kitchen, Jack finally invites Connie to a home-cooked dinner in the friends' apartment. He himself has neither representative rooms nor a suitable cooking area. Clyde and Lucy are already noticeably irritated by Jack's presence over the past few weeks and the slowly smoldering marital crisis. The four of them let their senses cloud their senses while enjoying a water pipe. Only when the smoke detector sounds the alarm do they notice that both the food in the oven and on the pan are on fire. Jack loses his nerve and locks himself in the bathroom.

Clyde and Lucy use large amounts of cocaine and get into more and more arguments. Meanwhile, Frederick surprisingly rings the doorbell, the jealous Clyde had invited him to dinner to expose Lucy in front of everyone. Lucy realizes what Clyde had tried to thread and loudly breaks up with him, and so Connie and Jack ultimately leave the apartment. Together they drive to Connie's apartment, where she expresses the wish never to be like Clyde and Lucy. Although she had planned her first time with Jack for the day of the summer boat trip, she asks Jack to sleep with her, and Jack agrees.

reception

In the United States, Jack in Love received mostly slightly good reviews. At Rotten Tomatoes , the film received a collective rating of 67% positive reviews and is therefore considered “fresh”.

“Despite its obvious independent look, the film is aesthetically what its protagonist is in life: a specimen of caution and caution. Only in a short sequence in the swimming pool does Hoffman find an image for the pain in life of his characters in the disturbing sight of another bathing guest. In general, the scenes in the swimming pool are among the best in the film. Otherwise, a static camera that appears narcotized remains on the surface of the constantly evoked loneliness and leaves most of the effects to the performance of the actors. Jack in Love is above all an intimistic film by an actor for actors. "

“Jack in Love is a chamber play bursting with joy, exhilarated by reggae from the sixties and soul from the seventies. Aside from the glossy romantic comedies, it reveals the no less great feelings in the calm New York working-class milieu. "
