Daphne Rubin-Vega (born November 18, 1969 in Panama City , Panama ) is a Panamanian-American theater and film actress.

Her breakthrough came with the Broadway musical Rent . She was best known as Gloria in the 1998 film Wild Things .

Life

Daphne Rubin-Vega grew up as the daughter of a woodcutter and a nurse in Panama City. Her stepfather Leonard Rubin is a screenwriter. Rubin-Vega came to the United States when he was two. Her mother died when Rubin-Vega was just ten years old.

Theater career

Daphne Rubin-Vega learned drama in William Espers Studio in New York City and studied with the New Labyrinth Theater Company . At the same time she tried her hand at a girl group as a singer and also as a solo artist. She then studied at NYU Film School to become a director.

With her musical talent, she managed to get a role as Mimi in the musical Rent , a contemporary adaptation of La Bohème , which also marked her breakthrough. During the audition, she tried Roxanne from The Police . She was nominated for a Tony for the role and received a Theater World Award . She could not take part in the film adaptation because she was pregnant at the time, which is why Rosario Dawson took over the role.

She received another nomination for her role in Anna in the Tropics .

Other roles were Lucy in Jack Goes Boating , Magenta in the Rocky Horror Show , Fantine in Les Misèrables and Stella in the classic A Streetcar Named Desire (German: Endstation Sehnsucht ).

In 2014, she played the vagina monologues in Spanish on an off-Broadway show in New York .

As a film actress

After a few minor supporting roles, she made her debut as a film actress in the erotic thriller Wild Things in 1998, for which she was awarded the Blockbuster Entertainment Award for Best Supporting Actress . This was followed in 1999 by Joel Schumacher's Spotless . Other film roles included Skeleton Woman (2000), Sex and the City: The Film (2008) and Rachel's Wedding (2008).

In 2010 she was allowed to repeat her Broadway role Lucy in the film adaptation Jack in Love by Philip Seymour Hoffman . She was also seen in the two television series Hustling (2011-2014) and Smash (2013).

In the late 1980s she was the lead singer of the girl group Pajama Party, which had three songs on the US Billboard charts in 1989 and 1990. She contributed background vocals for David Bowie on the soundtrack for Die Reise ins Labyrinth (1986). After the end of Pajama Party, she tried to establish herself as a solo artist and released several dance singles . In 1996 she was successful with the song I Found It in the Hot Dance Music / Club Play charts.

In 1999 she recorded the album Souvenirs for the Mercury Records label , which never came out because Rubin-Vega, like many artists, was released from Mercury after the merger of Polygram and Universal Records . However, the label insisted on its rights and refused to let the artist re-record the songs. She received a severance payment of approximately $ 325,000. She then distributed the unused promo CDs to visitors to the Rocky Horror Show on Broadway and encouraged them to leak the album . The album was later used for the Broadway Cares charity event .

In 2003, she reached the Elton John - Cover Man Rocket space 42 of the US Billboard charts.
