Jackie Cruz (born August 8, 1986 in Queens , New York City , New York ) is a Dominican - American actress . She is best known for her role as Flaca Gonzales in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black .

Life

Jackie Cruz was born on August 8, 1986 in the New York borough of Queens and grew up in Los Angeles and Santiago , Dominican Republic . She is fluent in English and Spanish. She wanted to be an actress when she was seven after seeing Whitney Houston in Bodyguard .

After first guest appearances in 2007 and 2008 in The Shield - Law of Violence and My Own Worst Enemy , she took on the role of Flaca Gonzales in 2013 in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black . Together with the rest of the cast of the series, Cruz won the Screen Actors Guild Award in 2015 and 2016 in the category Best Acting Company in a TV Series - Comedy .
