Jacksboro is the county capital and seat of the county seat of Jack County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is centrally located in the county on US Highway 281 in north Texas, is about 80 km from Oklahoma and has a total area of 17.6 km², of which 2.5 km² is water.
history
The first settlers arrived around 1855 and settled along the banks of Lost Creek . The place was named in honor of William H. Jack and his brother Patrick, both veterans of the Texas Revolution . In 1858 the Butterfield Overland Mail's first stagecoach arrived here.

According to the 2000 census, 4,533 people in 1,382 households and 954 families lived here. The population density was 300.7 inhabitants per km². The racial the population was composed of 81.95% White, 10.46% African American, 0.57% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, and 5.56% non-American ethnic groups. About 1.13% were mixed race and 10.74% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,382 households, 33.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.7% of these were married couples living together. 11.7% were single mothers and 30.9% were non-families. 28.4% of all households were single households and there were people living in 16.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.06.
21.7% of the population were under 18 years old, 13.0% 18 to 24, 33.1% 25 to 44, 17.9% 45 to 64, and 14.3% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 139.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 156.5 men.
The median income for a household in the 30,833 USD , and the median income for a family 36,759 USD. Males had a median income of $ 26,716 versus $ 20,592 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,595. 15.0% of the population and 12.2% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 16.0% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 14.4% were 65 or older.
