Jackson Wahengo

Jackson Wahengo (* 1978 in Ndola , Zambia ; actually Mbwayakalola Wahengo ) is a Namibian musician .

Life

Jackson Wahengo grew up in exile in Kwanza Sul ( Angola ) and Brazzaville ( Republic of the Congo ) . Silk's passion for music developed through singing freedom songs in the Angolan refugee camps. As a teenager he began to play the guitar and sang peace songs for his native Namibia during his stay in Angolan refugee camps. After their independence, he returned there in 1990.

From 1994 to 2003 Wahengo played together with his brothers Setson Wahengo and Tulonga Wahengo in the reggae band Mighty Dreads . He left the band to study jazz at the University of Cape Town , which he graduated with a diploma . He then played in the bands Formula Band and Eenganga until he moved to Geneva ( Switzerland ) with his wife and daughter in 2008 . Wahengo lived there until 2015, currently he lives and works in Copenhagen ( Denmark ).

Wahengo mixes traditional African elements with jazz, rumba , zouk , shambo and reggae in his Afropop music . He sings in his native Oshivambo about contemporary and traditional Namibian society and politics.

Wahengo has played in various bands in Namibia and South Africa and has performed at some famous festivals, including a. at the Montreux Jazz Festival . In 2012 he released his debut album Akutu Hewa .
