Jacob Alting
Jacob Alting (born September 27, 1618 in Heidelberg ; † August 20, 1679 ) was a German Reformed theologian .
Jacob Alting was a son of Johann Heinrich Alting . He attended schools in Emden , Leyden and Groningen . In 1631 he enrolled at the Imperial University of Groningen . He learned Hebrew in 1638 from a rabbi in Emden . Two years later Alting went to England, where he was ordained a preacher by Bishop John Prideaux (1578–1650). In 1643 he was appointed professor of oriental languages in Groningen, four years later he was also a preacher and in 1667 took over a theological professorship.
Alting got into theological dispute with Samuel Maresius , with Alting being defended by Johannes Coccejus and Jacob Rhenferd . His writings were published in five volumes in Amsterdam from 1685 to 1687.
