Jacob Iversen (born February 28, 1763 in Schwensby ( fishing ), † March 4, 1831 in Hattlund ( fishing )) was a German farmer and private scholar . He is one of the pioneers of rational agriculture in the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein .

Life

Jacob Iversen, son of a farmer, attended the district school in Schwensby and supplemented his knowledge by self-study in a relative's library. His wish to study agriculture was denied by a family resolution. Instead, after his marriage in 1786 , he took over the management of his father-in-law's farm and in 1795 his father's farm.

Iversen was an imaginative, open-minded farmer with progressive methods of farming. He carried out field tests on the areas of his courtyards and published the results in practical journals. Due to his activities, the marl of arable land found widespread use as an amelioration measure in fishing. With great success he improved the methods of cultivating rape . He received the gold medal from the Royal Danish Household Society for his book " Rape seed cultivation in Holstein, especially in the Duchy of Schleswig ", published in 1806 .

By studying the writings of leading agricultural scientists ( Albrecht Daniel Thaer , Johann Heinrich von Thünen etc.) and through numerous study trips to Schleswig and Holstein, Denmark and Holland, Iversen deepened his agricultural knowledge and was soon considered the most competent farmer in his region. After 1818 he published several independent writings. His most important publication is the book " Contributions to the knowledge of Schleswig-Holstein agriculture and its current conditions " , which appeared in 1819 . In his 1825 anonymous publication on what he saw as the unjust taxation of land in Schleswig and Holstein, he took a critical look at the practices of state administration.
