Meijer Isaac de Haan (also Meyer de Haan , born April 14, 1852 in Amsterdam , † October 24, 1895 there) was a Dutch painter .

Life

Meijer de Haan was born into a wealthy Jewish entrepreneurial family in Amsterdam. In 1888 he went to Paris to deepen his studies in painting. He lived for a few months with the art dealer Theo van Gogh . There he met Camille Pissarro and Paul Gauguin . In Pont-Aven in Brittany , he worked with the artists of the Pont-Aven school . The relationship with his colleague Gauguin was close, he often helped him out of financial difficulties. To escape the hustle and bustle of this place, he and Gauguin retired to the neighboring village of Le Pouldu in 1889 , where they rented the hotel cafe Buvette du plage and frescoed the dining room . De Haan began a relationship with the owner Marie Henry, from which a daughter, Ida, emerged. This is also where the self-portrait was made . Since his family stopped providing financial support and he could not go to Tahiti with Gauguin , he returned to Amsterdam in 1891, also for health reasons. Although he never saw Marie Henry again in his life, he bequeathed all of his works painted in France to her.
