Jacques Droz

Jacques Droz (March 12, 1909 in Paris , † March 3, 1998 in Paris) was a French historian .

Life

Droz passed his Agrégation in 1932 and became a teacher at the high school in Colmar . He was drafted in 1939 and taken prisoner of war . He was able to flee and then taught at various high schools in the Paris region.

In 1945 Droz received his doctorate for his research on the influence of the French Revolution on Rhenish liberalism between the Congress of Vienna in 1815 and the March Revolution in 1848. In the same year he became a professor at the Fustel de Coulanges high school in Strasbourg . From 1947 to 1962 he was a professor at the University of Clermont-Ferrand , from 1957 he was also dean of the local humanities faculty. Droz then succeeded Maurice Baumont as professor at the Sorbonnewhere he retired in 1972. Many of his works have been translated into German and English, especially the series History of Socialism edited by Droz , some also into other languages.

Droz was an expert on the history of political ideas, especially socialism and liberalism . He was also a specialist in the history of German-speaking countries. The historical journal praised Droz's history of social democracy in 1968:

"The present work is unrivaled insofar as there is no such general and reliable presentation of the main facts in any country that reliably takes into account all research results up to around 1960."

Since 1974 he has been a corresponding member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences .
