Accommodation on a hunting farm in Namibia

Hunting farms are mainly found in North America and southern Africa . Hunting farms enable hunters , mostly trophy hunters , to hunt on many square kilometers of private property or serve as a base for hunting trips. Sometimes hunting farms with guest farms or a lodge are operated in parallel on the same farmland .

In both hunting farms and safaris, trained hunting guides, also known as professional hunters , or the farmer himself accompany the hunt. Trophy hunting is usually the main income of the hunting farms. Hunting farms can also be cattle or sheep farms at the same time. In addition to the actual hunt - as on other guest farms - other leisure activities are usually offered to a lesser extent. These can include horse rides, sundowner rides or sitting at a waterhole. For hunters who arrive without their own weapon , rental weapons are available at most hunting farms. Bow hunting is also practiced on many hunting farms.

Hunting farms in Namibia

The history of the guest and hunting farms in Namibia goes back to the early 1960s. Due to a cattle disease, the farmers could no longer sell their cattle and looked around for new sources of income. One starting point was a vacation on the farm , i.e. the accommodation of tourists. Since long-distance travel was still rare back then, big game hunters belonged to the very small target group at the time. In 1973/74 the government issued a registration requirement for accommodation establishments.

A separate ordinance of April 18, 1974 was issued for trophy hunting. After that, hunting farms are obliged to register with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism in addition to that with the Namibia Tourism Board . Since then, hunting farms are only allowed to accommodate a maximum of two hunters with families or four individual hunters at the same time. Non-hunting guests may only be taken in as an escort. In 1988 over 200 hunting farms were registered. However, there was an unreported number of unregistered farms. At the end of August 1995, over 500 hunting farms were counted. Geographically, the hunting farms are mainly located in the regions of Otjozondjupa , Khomas , Erongo and Omaheke .
