Jaime Gilinski Bacal (born December 14, 1957 in Cali , Valle del Cauca ) is a London- based Colombian project developer , banker and billionaire and is considered one of the most successful bankers in Latin America . He built Banco GNB Sudameris through a series of acquisitions into a multinational bank with $ 9 billion in assets. In 2003 he bought property from the Italian Intesa Sanpaolo , which later merged with Banco Tequendama from Peru and an ATM network in Colombia called Servibanca . Today Banco GNB Sudameris is active in Colombia, Paraguay and Peru.

biography

Jaime Gilinski was born in Cali into a family of Jewish descent with roots in Lithuania . He is the son of Isaac Gilinski Sragovicz and Perle Bacal. His father lives in Miami . Gilinski attended the Jorge Isaacs Hebrew School in Cali and moved from Colombia at the age of 17 to study engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology . When he was 23, he did an MBA from Harvard Business School . He once confessed that at the time he “spoke little English but was good at mathematics”. He got his professional start in the merger and acquisition department of Morgan Stanley in the USA . Gilinski's father Isaac had built two large companies in Colombia, the snacks manufacturer Yupi and the plastics company Rimax, which gave the family the financial basis to pay for an expensive US education.

Gilinski also has a 5% stake in the publicly traded Banco Sabadell , the fourth largest private banking group in Spain . In Panama , Gilinski worked with British billionaire brothers Ian and Richard Livingstone to develop Panama Pacifico , a 4.45-acre development on the former US Howard Air Force Base , strategically located on the banks of the Panama Canal . The project is now home to more than 270 multinational tenants, including 3M , Dell and Caterpillar . Gilinski also owns hotels in Bogotá and Cartagena .

According to the US Bloomberg Billionaires Index , Gilinski is listed as the third richest Colombian with assets of 4.23 billion US dollars in 2018.
