Jaime Guardia Neyra (born February 10, 1933 in Pausa , Parinacochas Province , Ayacucho Region , Peru ; † July 16, 2018 in Lima ) was a Peruvian charango player , singer , composer and collector of traditional songs in Chanka-Quechua and Spanish .

Life

Jaime Guardia had many uncles and cousins who were musicians and played guitar, but his parents did not support his childhood musicality. He played quena and charango in particular , and in 1940 he came to Lima, where he made a name for himself as a charango player over time. In the 1950s he founded the Trio La Lira Paucina with Jacinto Peve and Luis Nakayama , with which six records were recorded. Later, the appearances as a soloist predominated both on the stage and on Peruvian television.

In the 1950s, Jaime Guardia met the writer José María Arguedas , head of the folklore department at the Peruvian Ministry of Education. Arguedas was in the process of writing his novel Todas las sangres . He decided to hire Jaime Guardia and Josafat Roel Pineda in the folklore department. Arguedas dedicated his novel Todas las sangres to Jaime Guardia.

For the young guitarist Manuelcha Prado , Jaime Guardia was a role model as a folklore musician from the Ayacucho region. When Manuelcha Prado came to Lima from Puquio in 1972 , he went to Guardia everywhere - “on the mountains, plains and sand,” as Prado says - to ask his advice.

Until a few years before his death, Jaime Guardia often performed together with the Charango and Manuelcha Prado with the guitar to perform traditional music from the Andes.

Jaime Guardia died on July 16, 2018.
