Charice (born on 10. May 1992 as Charmaine Clarice Relucio Pempengco in Cabuyao , Laguna , Philippines ) is a Filipino singer (born a woman). She began her career as a singer and internet phenomenon on the video portal YouTube . It was dubbed in 2010 by the talk show host Oprah Winfrey as Most Talented Girl in the World ("most talented girl in the world"). In the same year she released her first international album Charice , which debuted at 8th place on Billboard 200 . Charice had already referred to herself as transgender at Winfrey , chose the new name Jake Zyrus in June 2017 and sees herself as a man (therefore described as a male person in this article).

biography

He is the child of Ricky and Raquel Pempengco and has a younger brother. He began singing at the age of four and competed in competitions in his hometown of Laguna, Philippines, when he was seven. In total, he participated in over 100 competitions during his childhood, and the prize money was used to help the family maintain their standard of living.

In 2005 he took part in the reality show Little Big Star . In 2007 he appeared on the Korean show Star King . The video of this performance was seen by Ellen DeGeneres , who invited him to her show. An invitation to the Oprah Winfrey Show followed . Winfrey surprised Charice with his idol Celine Dion , with whom he was allowed to sing a duet in Madison Square Garden . In 2008 his first album Charice was released , which reached number 8 on the Billboard charts; My Inspiration followed in 2009 . In 2010 the single Pyramid was released , a duet with his label colleague Iyaz .

From 2010 to 2011 he had a guest role on the TV series Glee . In 2011, his father, a construction worker, was stabbed to death by a drunken customer in a grocery store near the capital, Manila , at the age of 40 .

Further international appearances

In April 2008 Charice was in London on the Paul O'Grady Show , followed by appearances with David Foster at the Mandalay Bay Resort Casino in Las Vegas . In July he was a guest at Andrea Bocelli's birthday and sang a duet with him. In September he sang You'll Never Walk Alone in front of 50,000 football fans in the Netherlands .
